The 39th annual Altrusa Home Tour, showcasing four homes in the south Denton and Oakmont area, will be held between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 18.  Tickets for the tour are $10 each, with proceeds benefitting organizations in the local community.  Organizations which have benefitted in previous years have included Adult Day Stay of North Texas, CASA, Communities in Schools, Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home, the Family Resource Center, Meals on Wheels, Our Daily Bread, and literacy programs in the Denton Independent School District.

Tickets in the form of a booklet may be obtained in advance at Williams and Williams Realtors, 2730 North Elm Street; the Courthouse Collection, 111 West Hickory Street; or Point Bank North Branch, 1700 Carroll Boulevard.  They may also be purchased at the door of each home on the day of the tour.  One ticket provides entry into all homes on the tour.

Altrusa International is an organization of business and professional women and men.  The Denton club was founded in 1960.  Its mission is to provide and support community service and to promote the development of its members in an atmosphere of unity.  In addition to contributing financial support to agencies via the club’s foundation, members also provide hands-on service within the Denton community.  The club began offering a spring tour of homes in 1966.

Homes on this year’s tour include the following:

Don and Anita Anderson

The home of Don and Anita Anderson is located in Wind River Estates off Lillian Miller Parkway.  The Andersons purchased this three-bedroom, two-bath home 15 months ago.  Since moving in, they have been busy landscaping the yard and decorating the home.

The house has a very open floor plan and is beautifully decorated with their collection of antiques, art, and family items.  Anita’s parents’ first bed is in the guest bedroom.  Many of the antiques were purchased in New England and are from the 1780 – 1820 time frame.

Anita is the owner of Anita Riney Anderson Interiors and Don has been a builder and developer.

Mike and Sue Briscoe

The home of Mike and Sue Briscoe and family is located in the original Oakmont addition of Corinth off Robinson Road and Vintage Street.  It is a traditional one-story house with four bedrooms and four bathrooms.

The Briscoes have lived in the house for eight years and have completed many projects during that time.  All of the closets, as well as the utility room, have been customized.  The most recent renovation project has been the kitchen, which includes limestone countertops, a custom vent hood, new cabinet doors, a concrete sink, and new hardware.

The back yard pool is a great place to entertain during the summer months.

Ron and Terri Guthrie

The two-story brick home of Ron and Terri Guthrie was built in 1992, when daughters Codi and Kelsie were 5 and 3.    Ron designed the home and did much of the initial work.  The architecture and décor reflect the couple’s Southern heritage.  The home features antiques, several of which were from Terri’s parent’s antique and gift store in Mississippi.   Adjacent to the entry is a room filled with Ron’s flight memorabilia commemorating his military service as an Air Force Top Gun fighter pilot as well as his accomplishments as a pilot for Delta Airlines.  Throughout the home are family pictures and numerous awards received by Codi and Kelsie, who are now students at UNT and the University of Oklahoma.   In the main living area is a picture of the Guthrie daughters when they appeared on “Good Morning America.”   Also of special note is a carved table from India shaped like a camel.  It was brought over by Terri’s father following World War II after being stored nearly a year at the bottom of his navy ship’s engine room.

A “teen room” with a Texas motif is located at the top of a spiral staircase.  Painted on the ceiling are cattle brands from Denton County and for the Guthrie family, as well as a Texas flag and map of Texas.  The Guthrie’s favorite room is a sunroom overlooking the back yard.  For warmer weather, the room converts to a screened porch.  It has an 8 foot long hanging porch swing built by Ron.  The home also features two antique claw foot tubs and personalized hand painted murals in the girls’ bedrooms.

Rocky and Andrea Haire

This spacious home is located in a relatively new portion of Forrestridge.  With a flagstone front porch, an iron gate, and a beautiful wooden entry door with leaded glass inserts, it has the elegant look of an English castle.  Local attorney Rocky Haire, his wife Andrea, and their four sons reside here.

The living area on first floor is an open floor plan. The breakfast area overlooks the pool and spa in the back yard.  The large master bedroom includes a fireplace.  The library, with its vaulted ceiling, was recently made into a nursery for the newest member of the Haire family.  Above it is a room used by Andrea for scrapbooking projects.  The first floor also includes a guest room in French country style with antique furnishings.   The second floor includes two boys’ bedrooms and a family room with balcony.
